They were the founders of Montpellier. On 26 November 985, Count Bernard de Melgueil (Mauguio) granted the knight Guilhem the ancient territory between the ancient Domitian Way, the Lez and the Mosson in exchange for his devotion. His heirs built a fortified town on their new fief, complete with castle and chapel, which would later become the city of Montpellier.
