Tallinn is the capital and the most populous city of Estonia with a population of around 437,000 people. It is located in the northern part of the country on the shore of the Gulf of Finland of the Baltic Sea and is considered to be the main financial, industrial and cultural centre of Estonia.

The city is a brilliant place for business and is said to have the highest number of start-up companies among the European countries. The city has furthermore been listed among the top ten digital cities of the world and is scheduled to house the headquarters of the European Union’s IT agency and is home to NATO Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence.

Even though Tallinn was first mentioned in 1154 and received city rights in 1248, the earliest human settlements date back around 5,000 years. It was known as one of the most important medieval port city centres in the Gulf of Finland. Tallinn’s old city centre is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The old town is today filled with restaurants, bars, museums, and galleries bringing much life to the small cobblestoned streets. Here you will also find medieval churches and grandiose merchant houses, barns and warehouses many of which date all the way back to the Middle Ages.

The city is a perfect mix between the comforts of the modern world, versatile nightlife, and a rich culture scene in a historical setting. A stone’s throw away from the old city centre you’ll find the city’s business centre with modern towers and luxurious hotels, trendy neighbourhoods and large shopping centres.

Tallinn is visited by 4.3 million tourists every year, a number that is and has been steadily rising over the past decade. One the things drawing in the large number of visitors is the city’s large number of museums and galleries. Tallinn is home to more than 60 museums and galleries, most of which are located in the central district of the city, Kesklinn.
