Graz is the second largest city of Austria and the capital of the state Styria. It covers an area of 127.57 sq. km and has a population of 294,630 (2020).

Graz is known in Austria for many things like the university and high number of student residents. The four universities and connected colleges combined occupy more than 60.000 students. The largest one is called Universität Graz, and specialises in research-led courses in a broad variety. The large number of students means the city is typically full of life both in the parks, on the bars, cafés and the streets in general.

Graz is also recognized around Europe in terms of preserved architecture, and has over time earned the nickname, the red roof city because of the many old buildings with red clay roofs.. In fact they have one of the best preserved city centres in central Europe, which was awarded the status of a Unesco World Heritage. Right in the heart of Graz lies the oasis of mediaeval landmarks and charming buildings from previous centuries.

Along this, the architecture of Graz bears hints of Austria's Italian neighbours in the form of  Renaissance patios and baroque palaces. The City Hall is a must when you visit, it majestically rises above the city with dramatic decorations with details down to the cm in a late Historicist-Old German-style which reflects how Graz has prospered over time.

Ancient castles are additionally everywhere to find in the area.

While Graz is home to many impressive preserved constructions built centuries ago, it’s also packed with eclectic, modern and edge-cutting architecture built in much more recent years by both old and known architects such as Peter Cook and Colin Fournier who designed the infamous gallery Kunsthaus Graz or even the legendary Zaha Hadid who designed an apartment building called Argos, but also young aspiring ones. 

In the middle of the busy streets, a spouting river runs through and brings a grounded sensation to the fast-paced weekdays. The sounds of the flowing water stand beautifully in contrast to the sounds of cars, shoes on the pavements and other sounds of the city. If you enjoy these forms of small pockets of nature close or in the city, the characteristic cliff of Graz is the perfect spot for a break. You can reach the viewpoint from either stairs or a funicular straight from the centre. 

Getting around in Graz is unproblematic and most things can be reached by just a walk through town, however if it’s necessary, there are reliable and integrated public transportation services with 6 tram lines and 33 bus line including night buses.
