Kristiansand is the most southern and fifth largest city of Norway with a population of 112.588 (2021). It covers an area of 428.21 sq.km of which some are located on small islands just by the coast.

The city is widely known as Norway's No 1 Holiday Resort for many reasons. Firstly the city is located on the southern coast, which makes the local climate considerably more sunny and warmer than the rest of Norway. A number of beaches are crowded in the summer season, as the Norwegians flock to catch some of the rather rare sunny hours in the crystal clear, yet also colder waters. Secondly Kristiansand consists of a large number of vacation homes built throughout the last couple of decades, or renovated from some of the old wooden houses already there.

On the harbour of the city lies the recognizable and iconic colourful houses, which are a large tourist attraction in the area. The houses give off a captivating sense of the Scandinavian lifestyle.

Kristiansand is home to University of Agder, which occupies 13.690 (2020) students and around 1000 employees. This means a lot of students tend to look towards the area around semester start each year. As the holiday visitors leave in summer, the students take over the city, which keeps Kristianstad a lively place all year round.

Apart from this, Kristiansand has a lively cultural and artistic scene, which includes countless museums, galleries and concerts. If shopping is more your cup of tea, Kvadratruten, which is located in the centre, is full of stores selling everything the heart could desire. And if you’re feeling hungry after the many hours of exploring, shopping and experiencing, Kristiansand is home to a long list of restaurants, with both cheaper and more expensive options. When the sun goes down, the streets change completely as the nocturnal businesses open up and welcome people in for a beer, drink or a dance.
