3. Contact the landlord

When you have found a room for rent in Gent that you are interested in, you must contact the landlord. You must be prepared to write an application to the landlord, in which you tell a little about yourself and why you want to rent the room for rent. You can also ask for a showing of the room for rent, so you can see it with your own eyes.

4. Have the lease checked by a lawyer

When you have found your new room for rent in Gent, you must sign a contract with the landlord. It is important that you get advice from a lawyer so that you make sure that everything is in order. A contract must include information about the rent, deposit, heat consumption, condition upon moving in, etc. You must, among other things, pay close attention to whether the rental is taken over repaired or unrepaired, as this can have a major impact on the costs you will be charged when you move out later. Always have a lawyer or legal practitioner check the lease before you sign it.

5. Check out the landlord properly

If the landlord wants to rent out an apartment that he owns or rents, it is not certain that he can do this without further ado. Check the housing association's statutes. Here you will be able to see any reservations regarding the housing rental right.

6. Deposit

Once you have signed the lease, you must pay a deposit to the landlord. The deposit is a security for the landlord in case you cause damage to the room for rent or do not pay the rent. The deposit is typically one month's rent. When both you and the housing provider have signed the lease, you will typically have several days to transfer the deposit. You should only transfer the money here to a bank in your own country bank.

You must never transfer the deposit under these conditions

- Never transfer the deposit/rent for the room to a bank outside your own country.

- Never transfer the deposit/rent for the room to a person you have not met in person.

- Never transfer the deposit/rent for the room until you have a contract signed by both parties.

- Never transfer the deposit/rent for the room before you have checked whether the housing provider has the right to rent out the room in question.

- Never transfer the deposit/rent for the room before you have seen the room.

7. Make a clear agreement on moving in

Remember to make a clear agreement with the landlord about the transfer. When can you move in? When will you get the keys? etc. etc.

8. Relocation

When everything is in place, you can start moving into your new room for rent. Remember to report your move to your local municipal moving center so they know you've moved.

Useful to know when you are looking for room in Gent

Ghent is the third largest city of Belgium with around 250.000 inhabitants (2018), and is located in the Flemish region, East Flanders province.

Ghent is ‘one of the oldest cities of Belgium, with a rich history dating far back. The earliest evidence of human presence has been archaeologically dated back to the Stone age. Since then the area around Ghent has been inhabited by dozens of civilisations, who all have left their imprint on the city. Ghent has successfully preserved many of the buildings and constructions from some of the later centuries, which is why Ghent is known as a view into the past of Belgium. The Mediaeval architecture still stands strong and is well maintained.

Additionally these old charming churches and houses attract tourists from all over Europe. In the centre of Ghent was once the St-Pietersabdij Abbey (a kind of monastery), a baroque-fronted church survived and now decorate the centre with beautiful spears and grand entrances. A walk through the centre will almost take you to a different time, especially as  the zone is car-free.

Ghent is the perfect example of a city large enough to feel the fast paced big city life, yet also small enough to feel cosy and know your neighbors by first name. There’s also a contrast in the city landscape, as the centre is full of stunning old architecture, but there are also industrial streets in the suburbs providing the area with jobs.

As one of Belgium's largest universities is located in the city, a lot of students choose to settle here, pulling down the average age and livening up the nightlife and artistic scene.

This has been one of the factors causing Ghent to end up with some of the best museums in Belgium.

If you venture a bit out of the city borders, a 12th-century stone castle by the name Gravesteen will appear complete with turrets, arrow slits and moats.

The nature around Ghent is quite picture-worthy as well. Parks are located throughout the area, and close by lies a nature reserve with a stunning and kind of mysterious landscape full of marshes and water birds wintering.
